ICHEON MEDIA FACADE : From Clay and Fire to Light (The Living Flow of Icheon Ceramics)

경기도 이천 분수대 오거리에 설치된 LED 미디어파사드 프로젝트는, 이천이 오랜 시간 쌓아온 도자 문화의 정체성과 흐름을 현대적인 미디어아트로 풀어낸 공공 프로젝트입니다. 흙과 불에서 시작된 이천 도자의 근원적 이야기에서 출발해, 고려 청자와 조선 백자, 달항아리를 거쳐 모던 도자기로 이어지는 시간의 변화를 하나의 시각적 서사로 구성했습니다. 각 도자 양식은 유약의 흐름과 불꽃의 에너지, 빛의 변화를 통해 LED 파사드 위에 감각적으로 구현되며, 전통의 미감과 현대적 표현이 자연스럽게 어우러집니다. 이를 통해 도자 제작 과정에 담긴 장인 정신과 축적된 시간을 직관적으로 전달합니다. 본 프로젝트는 도시의 중심 교차로를 일상 속 문화 공간으로 전환하며, 이천 도자기의 역사와 가치를 시민과 방문객 모두에게 공유합니다. 전통 문화가 미디어 기술을 통해 현재의 공간에서 다시 호흡하는 모습을 보여주는 의미 있는 공공 미디어아트 작업입니다.

The LED media façade project installed at the Fountain Intersection in Icheon, Gyeonggi-do, is a public media art work that reinterprets the identity and historical flow of Icheon’s long-standing ceramic culture through a contemporary visual language. Beginning with the fundamental story of clay and fire, the project presents a visual narrative that traces the evolution of Icheon ceramics—from Goryeo celadon and Joseon white porcelain to the iconic moon jar, and onward to modern ceramics. Each ceramic form is sensorially expressed across the LED façade through flowing glazes, the energy of flames, and shifting light, creating a natural dialogue between traditional aesthetics and modern media expression. This approach conveys the craftsmanship and accumulated time inherent in ceramic making in an intuitive and engaging way. Transforming a central urban intersection into a cultural canvas within everyday life, the project shares the history and value of Icheon ceramics with both citizens and visitors. It stands as a meaningful example of how traditional culture can be revitalized and experienced anew through contemporary media technology.
